CFTA Staff visit Nevada County Cultural District

The state legislature put in place an important new tool for the development, support and preservation of California’s extensive and diverse cultural assets. AB 189 was authored by Assemblymember Richard Bloom and co-authored by Assemblywoman Marie Waldron.

The legislation charged the CAC with establishing criteria and guidelines for state-designated cultural districts. The final CA Budget was signed June 29, 2022 with $30 Million allocated for cultural districts program (SB 154). The $30 million one-time General Fund is to be spent over three years, to support the fourteen existing cultural districts. This funding will also expand the cultural districts program to support traditionally underserved communities that reflect the geographic and racial diversity of the state and enable the Arts Council to provide technical assistance.
