No Need for Directions: A Day as a Tourist in Your Own City

Doesn’t every city have that spot or spots that tourists flock to, but locals would never? I can’t imagine that many Parisians would willingly get into a lineup for the Eiffel Tower. I don’t think many Cariocas in Rio spend much time at Cristo Redentor. Are there many Chilangos that head over to El Zócalo in Mexico City?

Have I been to all those places? You bet your ass I have.

Where I live, there’s this contraption in the “old part” of town called the Gastown Steam Clock. It was installed in 1977 and it goes off every 15 minutes to the delight of the assembled picture takers. It hasn’t run on steam since 1986 when it was replaced by an electric motor, but it still looks and sounds like it does. What the onlookers don’t know won’t hurt them, I guess.
