What Became of the Nashville I Knew and Loved

My first time in Nashville, TN, was in early August 1973. My mother and I flew into Nashville the day before I was to register for college at Fisk University. Nearby hotels were booked, and we ended up staying in nearby Madison, TN, about ten miles away. I’d spent my entire life in Minneapolis, about as far North as you can be from Nashville in the lower 48 states.

We stayed at a Holiday Inn without incident and had breakfast at a Denny’s Restaurant next door. Things seemed quite normal until our middle-aged waitress approached. In a drawl I wrongly assumed was an exaggeration, she said, “Can I help y’all?” I knew I wasn’t in Minnesota anymore. I wasn’t afraid, but it’s safe to say my guard was up.
