Feral cats. Mysterious pigs. Sleeping watchdogs.

A week or so before last year’s Giving Tuesday— a day when millions of Americans donate to charity — the staff of an animal-welfare nonprofit called Alley Cat Allies got busy.

First, Alley Cat Allies bought a 17-acre plot of land in Berkeley County, WV, for $311,000. Why would an advocacy group that calls itself the “the global engine of change for cats” acquire real estate in West Virginia? Good question, and one of many that Alley Cat Allies declines to answer.

A day later, with no notice, Alley Cat Allies filed a sensational lawsuit against Berkeley County Animal Control, charging that the agency “knowingly and recklessly withheld necessary medical treatment for animals in its shelter, causing extreme suffering and in some cases death.”
