Mycorrhizal Madness

There’s the proverbial tip of the iceberg; then there’s the not-so-proverbial tip of the fungus.

Both indicate something hidden. Around 10% of an iceberg’s volume is underwater. For mushroom-forming fungi, the percentage varies, but in some cases, most of the fungal biomass exists as a vast network of subsurface threads, sometimes with nary a mushroom in sight.

Collectively called the mycelium, those threads — or hyphae as they’re termed — permeate the soil and other substrates.
