In the Footsteps of My Father

STEGLITZ, Germany — Standing outside the John F. Kennedy School in the far reaches of western Berlin I realize I am unlike the commuters and groups of school pupils that just got off the S-Bahn I took across town to get here.

One side of the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin shows a billboard marking its 60th anniversary. Van Buskirk’s father attended this school in its early years.

With each step they take, they seem to be springing into the future, while I am on a blast to the past to puzzle piece together the picture of my dad’s childhood, to help me better understand James Floyd Van Buskirk’s life before I called him “Dad.”
