Street Art in a Small Spanish Mountain Village

Located in the Alto Mijares county, Fanzara is a small Castellón community in the hills inland from Valencia City. The village, surrounded by mountains and sitting on the banks of the River Mijares does, like many others in the region, have a history dating back to the times when the Moors ruled Spain.

Also like many other rural communities, Fanzara was faced with a declining population as many young people headed to the cities for work. Unlike other small villages, Fanzara was transformed into an open-air art gallery in 2014 and, due to this initiative, now receives many visitors.

Lifelong fans of art, Javier López and Rafa Gascó firstly launched MIAU, Museo Inacabado del Arte Urbano (the Unfinished Museum of Urban Art) with a view to inviting street artists to come and paint. The museum is ‘unfinished’ as the art is constantly changing. Either new murals are painted, or old faded painting are covered with something new in subsequent years.
