The True Meaning of Morality in Islam

Islam provides clear and comprehensive guidance on leading an ethical life. Morality in Islam encompasses one’s duties towards God, fellow humans, animals and nature, society, and even one’s self. The Quran and teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lay down virtues such as honesty, justice, generosity, humility, kindness, and selflessness that serve as the foundation for an upright moral framework in Islam.

Defining Morality

Morality essentially means distinguishing right from wrong and acting accordingly. Islam teaches that morality stems from taqwa or God-consciousness, which guides a Muslim to fulfill his duties while being mindful of God at all times. Taqwa thus forms the basis for righteousness in Islam.
