Speaking of the Santa Monica Mountains
<p>The Temescal Canyon Trail, which Claire called Temescula, Pieter called Temescal, and I called a hike, was not made for children, or dogs.</p>
<p>Here my own etymological wilderness is stretched and dried. Where it’s hard to imagine water, it’s hard to imagine growth before death. There was so much sand, so many rocks covered by sand and hills that looked like compacted rocks and sand, thistles, and plants from a dry place that split from exhaustion when picked.</p>
