How Money Turns People Into Liars

My mistrust of people trying to sell me things has only grown from that point.

I had a similar eye-opening experience as a young adult reading a news story about medical costs. An expert was quoted as saying that if insurance were to pay surgeons more for doing Surgery A than Surgery B, it was a “no-brainer” (I remember that phrase particularly!) that surgeons would do Surgery A.

It hadn’t been a no-brainer to me. I had honestly believed that if a doctor told me I needed a specific procedure, it would be because I needed it — not because the doctor wanted to sell me a surgical procedure. Doctors make plenty of money anyway, I had reasoned. Why would they be motivated to carve into your body just to make a higher profit?
