The One Minute Geographer: A Tale of Two New Jersey Cities — Newark and Paterson

<p>Newark (13,000 people per square mile) and Paterson (19,000) both have dense populations although they are not among the top five in the state. Both cities substantially gained population between 2010 and 2020, growing at a rate faster than New Jersey as a whole.</p> <p>Were it not for New York, a mere eight miles away, (Newark&rsquo;s and New York&rsquo;s skylines are visible to each other) Newark, with 2.1 million people, would be recognized as a large and important metropolitan area in its own right.</p> <p>Newark is close enough to Manhattan to be tied by PATH commuter trains (Port Authority Trans Hudson). Newark was home to almost 450,000 people in 1930 but, like a lot of northeastern central cities, its population plummeted to 275,000 in 2000.
