Minecraft nears 15th anniversary with 300 million sales milestone

The iconic video game, Minecraft, is gearing up for its 15th anniversary next year, and a glimpse into its enduring popularity has just been unveiled: the game has now crossed the remarkable milestone of selling more than 300 million copies worldwide. To provide context for this astonishing achievement, it’s noteworthy that even Grand Theft Auto V, a heavyweight in the gaming industry, lags behind with over 185 million copies sold. The considerable time gap since Grand Theft Auto V’s release in 2013 doesn’t close the considerable chasm in sales, particularly when one considers that Minecraft had already surpassed the 200 million sales mark in 2020.

The milestone was proudly announced by Mojang Studios during a recent Minecraft Live event. This event was not only a platform for celebrating the game’s enduring success but also a forum for introducing exciting new features soon to be available to players. These features include a trial chamber laden with traps and mobs, presenting players with a thrilling challenge across a series of rooms and corridors. Moreover, Minecraft enthusiasts can look forward to the arrival of two new downloadable content (DLC) packs — the Star Wars: Path of the Jedi DLC set to launch on November 7 and the Planet Earth DLC slated for early release next year.
