Taiwan Has Failed to Reform its Military Culture: Soldiers Bullied to Death

In September 2023, Taiwan witnessed a tragic incident in which a young Marine lieutenant, surnamed Cheng (鄭), was discovered hanging from a tree. At 23 years old, Cheng held the role of platoon leader within the “Republic of China” Marine Corps’ 99th Brigade. Initially, the Taiwanese authorities claimed that this was a suicide. This claim was disputed by the Cheng family who asserted that Cheng had been subjected to bullying by his superiors and that an alleged cover-up had taken place.
