Taiwan Has Failed to Reform its Military Culture: Soldiers Bullied to Death
<p>In September 2023, Taiwan witnessed a tragic incident in which a young Marine lieutenant, surnamed Cheng (鄭), was discovered hanging from a tree. At 23 years old, Cheng held the role of platoon leader within the “Republic of China” Marine Corps’ 99th Brigade. Initially, the Taiwanese authorities claimed that this was a suicide. This claim was disputed by the Cheng family who asserted that Cheng had been subjected to bullying by his superiors and that an alleged cover-up had taken place. In a dramatic act of protest, Cheng’s father attempted to set himself on fire at the gates of the ROC Marine Corps base but was stopped by guards and taken to the hospital for care.</p>
