Midjourney Vary (Region): the first look at the new Inpainting feature

Midjourney just released a new exciting inpainting feature called the Vary (Region) today.

After you have upscaled an image, it will appear alongside the Vary (Strong) and Vary (Subtle) buttons.

It is recommended that you use the
/remix
mode to edit the prompt and make changes for the best inpainting results. To activate the
/remix
mode, type
/remix
. To deactivate, re-type
/remix
.

Key points about Vary (Region)

After clicking the Vary (Region) button, an editor will appear. This allows you to choose which areas of the image to do the inpainting.

You can select one or more regions using the Rectangle and/or Lasso tools.

To fine-tune your selection, use both the Rectangle and Lasso tools.

It’s easier to select a large area with the Rectangle tool first. Then, refine the edge with the Lasso tool.

The editor has no “subtract” function.

On the top left of the editor, there is an Undo button. To deselect the selected area, click Undo.

After selecting the region where you want to change/do the inpainting, edit the prompt (e.g., add “wearing glasses,” or “wearing earrings”) in the text entry area.

Press ENTER to submit your change. (You can also click on the small and round arrow button at the bottom right of the editor.)

If you’re not happy with your inpainting results, reroll to see what else is available. Rerolls after inpainting will only affect the selected/edited region.
