How have you settled in?

Don’t approach me when I’m in the middle of cooking, or I’ll fall apart. When things are simmering and smelling nice, you can come and I’ll gladly lift the lid to show you, even if the kitchen is still a mess.

My flatmate knows that. So, who’s coming?, she asks and I don’t even have to pretend. I sigh, I turn to her apologetically and reply: Look, I can’t hold a conversation right now, I am too stressed. She walks off, Okay, I’ll leave you to it. I don’t have a lot of mental space for insights, but there is knowledge in the back of my head that she will come back and ask again, and that this is one of the many reasons I am so grateful for her in my life.

I was making carrot fries. That’s how low my threshold is.
