Microsoft looks to relocate AI researchers out of China

Top AI experts working at Microsoft’s research arm in China (Microsoft Research Asia; MSRA) are being relocated to Canada as geopolitical tensions rise in a move that might threaten the Asian giant’s talent pool.

Why the move?
Four people with knowledge of the plans, dubbed the move as the “Vancouver Plan” further citing that 20 to 40 top level staff members are set to be relocated in Microsoft’s new lab in Vancouver where other international experts will join them. This is a direct response to the years’ recent tensions between the US and China as well as to prevent Chinese companies poaching top talent, like Tencent who has recently started building its AI arm amidst its first annual revenue drop.
