Michael McClure- The Body and Mind

Michael McClure dives into the themes of nature, spirituality, and the human condition. He was and still is a key figure in the Beat Generation. This time period was most known for the psychedelic era. Many Beat poets and musicians used this to get a high and expand your mind while working. McClure wrote a poem called, “Peyote Poem.” Peyote is a small cactus that contains psychoactive alkaloids and has a history of usage among spiritual and indigenous groups. McClure wrote this poem during one of his highs and experiences with this psychedelic. This poem reflects nature, spirituality and altered states of his consciousness which is a key theme throughout his poem. This poem shows his mind separating from his body. For example he shows this by saying, “I see all there is to feel”(McClure 265).
