The Mystery of the Masquerade (Revisited)

Let’s talk about masks for a bit — such as the ones worn for Carnival all over the world. With Carnival, the art of the masquerade unfolds in the same way it has for the last few centuries in Italy and the Americas, where you see some of the beautiful and all of the unforgettable. Feathers, capes, and colored clothing strum in and out throughout the many parties that last usually ten days, with some regional variations spanning months.

Revelers embody popular characters and archetypes, some dating back to the 1200s, just a few centuries after Carnival’s (or in Italian, Carnevale) inception in Venice, Italy. However, this festival isn’t confined to a single locale; it’s a global affair, with a particular life of its own in the Americas.
