4 things I learned from reading Mary Douglas

Dame Mary Tew Douglas (March 25, 1921 — May 16, 2007) was a British anthropologist, known for her writings on human culture, symbolism and comparative religion. She was considered a follower of Émile Durkheim’s approach to social theory.

I was always fascinated by how anthropologists challenge our common understandings of how things in our society came to be regarded as “normal”.

Mary Douglas is exceptional in this regard — her wide scope of analysis combined with her ability to simplify complex topics — makes her an accessible and deep thinker.
