Cracking the 3-Hour Marathon Barrier: Ingredients for Success

<p>I stood at the starting line of the Chicago Marathon, packed in like a sardine among 47,000 other runners. The air was crisp, in the 40s &mdash; a runner&rsquo;s dream. The Chicago course? Pancake flat. As the crowd constricted around me by the start line, I felt lucky. Philosopher Seneca said, &ldquo;Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.&rdquo; But I knew luck alone wouldn&rsquo;t carry me 26.2 miles.</p> <p>This marathon was different &mdash; it was my fourth, but the first where I felt truly prepared. My journey to this point had been fraught with challenges. My debut at the New York City Marathon was a trial by fire; I had just recovered from an Achilles injury and had zero training. Then came Tokyo in March, where I ran through the pain of overtraining injuries. By the time I reached London in April, I was on the mend but far from peak shape.
