I wish you would come with a manual

<p>I&rsquo;ve frequently heard from my American friends, born to first-generation immigrant parents, that I am neurotic because my own parents, being first-generation immigrants, imposed redundant family rules that drew me into their anxieties and fears, and I did not want it for you&rdquo;</p> <p>We sat as a family around the Hanukkah table. Candles were blinking in mysterious fire, and latkes were expelling their bubbling personality and starch consistency. I remember in the Soviet Union, it was a law &mdash; once adults are talking, kids can listen and stay quiet. But no such rule is here &mdash; a child is an equally respected member of the family. A child can express their thoughts and concerns.
