Management May Not Be for You

Those who never were a manager themselves may have a romantic idea of what it is like: you have the power to do what is needed, the wisdom to use your power well, and you gain the admiration of your subordinates who recognize your eminent leadership.

In addition, this romantic idea usually contains a belief that managers decide for themselves what they want to do. It is all up to the manager if things are done right or wrong.

In real life, a manager is often in a situation where it is impossible to do what is right — something is preventing it — and very often that is a demand from above; because even managers have managers. Or it is a matter of choosing between plague and cholera — no matter what, the situation will turn to the worse.

While some situations are caused by events out of your control, you will be surprised to see how much of the trouble is actually caused by the people around you from whom you would expect support and collaboration rather than trouble.

I will reveal a small selection of such situations from my own experience, some anecdotes for you to laugh, cry, or learn from — slightly changed and anonymized but still realistic. People were indeed behaving as idiotic or evil as it sounds.

Visit Now
