I’ve Never Loved Carrying a Purse

When I was young it was expected that if you were a woman, you had a purse. At first, I didn’t mind having one. I needed to carry my sanitary supplies and contact lens solution anyway. But it did rankle me that men weren’t required to carry a bag of some kind. Plus, women’s clothes didn’t have functional pockets much of the time whereas men’s clothes had pockets inside pockets.

So I begrudgingly accepted that I would have to carry a purse. The biggest stress for me was when I realized that some people expected women had different purses for different outfits. That felt like too much wasted bandwidth to keep up with the fashion trends and color matching, so I stuck with a black eel skin purse (likely fake, now that I’m thinking about it) for years. It went with everything.
