How to Draw Someone’s Portrait Without Making Them Look Hideous

Back in the olden days, if you wanted to have an image of yourself created, you had to either look in a mirror and draw or paint yourself, or have someone else do it for you. The latter was the preferred method, especially if it was done by someone who actually knew what they were doing and who didn’t dislike you.

Having a portrait professionally painted was an agonizing exercise in sitting still for hours or even days. Just imagine having to hold a pose for several days while the artist did things such as eating and drinking and getting a good night’s sleep.

Eventually, photography was invented, making portraits more accurate. It also made sitting for portraits a much less arduous process, aside from the neck clamp, the sitting without moving a whisker for several minutes, and the inability to blink without looking like a spooky freak in the picture.

Not only that, but a photographer didn’t have to carry all that paint and all those brushes. He just had to have a gigantic box camera, a 4-ft tripod, plates, film, flash bulbs, flash powder, a backdrop, and a stuffed bird dangling from a fishing pole to attract the attention of small children.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and everyone is taking pictures of themselves with minimal effort. Just whip out a mobile phone, set it to selfie mode, and click away. Then review the dozens of photos and throw away the ones that are blurry, the ones in which you or one of your friends blinks, the ones that made you look fat or short or bitchy, and the ones in which some drunk weirdo made grotesque faces in the background. Then take the remaining few photos and run various filters on them until you’re barely recognizable, and voila, you’re ready to post them online amongst the quadrillions of other selfies that were posted in the past month.

Learn More
