Are We All A Little Suicidal?

First of all, let me state what hopefully will be obvious— I am in no way intentionally making light of suicide by my use of this word in the title. My heart breaks for anyone whose life has been touched by this tragedy. Please reach out for help if you’re having suicidal ideation.

Now, with that said, let’s get on to this joyless, confrontational piece. How’s that for inspiring you to read further? Yes, it will be uncomfortable.

Don’t worry, though, on the other side of it is a renewal of determination—

When I was in my teens, I had a daunting realization about time.

If a man lives another 10 years, and you subtract the time he sleeps, prepares meals, takes care of life tasks and travels to and fro, he only has about 6 years remaining. If he is working full time, then that leaves him with another three years chopped off. Three years left to live!

Proud of my admittedly subjective calculation, I rushed to share it.

“Mom, if you have sixty years left live, you don’t really have sixty years. You have just twenty real years in terms of free time — to really live!”

From the expression on her face, it was clear that she was not excited.

Indeed, none of us really want to think about our time coming.

Most of us, even as the years mount, live in a fog. We fall into the trap of assuming that we have plenty of time to live, plenty of time to waste.

I shudder to think of how much time I’ve wasted.

The time in my life I’ve spent watching or reading the news, consuming YouTube videos, scrolling through and posting on social media, the TV shows I watched, even the books I consumed but didn’t really apply.

What else could I have done with all of that time?

Is not wasting time out of our precious lives a sort of slow suicide?

You’ve surely heard the apologue of the boiling frog.
