Linus Media Group’s Failure Signals The End Of An Era

Linus Tech Tips is one of the oldest YouTube channels I have been following for well over a decade. It also happens to be one of the very few I kept regularly watching despite the many changes it has gone through over the years, and it generally being anti-Apple, a lot like Louis Rossman’s, though for very different reasons. I kept watching because living in an echo chamber as a technologist is the last thing I’d want. I need to hear the other side of the conversation, and for what it’s worth, sometimes the other side is right, or at the very least has a point. Watching Linus Tech Tips and his entire media group’s other channels, however, started getting increasingly frustrating, culminating in a screeching halt brought on by what feels like very much an inevitable scandal.

Zero surprises here

Waking up to my best mate’s text message saying “Looks like Linus got himself into trouble again.” while being an unconventional substitute for a “good morning”, was not at all unexpected news. Yet, the internet is shocked, and I have to wonder why?

Have they not been watching the same LTT we have all been for the last few years? The same LTT that has a segue to a sponsor every minute or so, even if you’re on YouTube Premium? The same LTT that created — sorry, modified — a white-labelled backpack, a screwdriver, a blade, then proceeded to advertise it like it was a VIP ticket to heaven itself? And that’s on top of all the pillows, hoodies, T-shirts, water bottles and God knows what else. Watching an LTT video is like walking through a crowd of religious zealots, all trying to sell you some form of salvation subject to an exorbitant fee.
