Lindsey Graham “Totally Surprised” By GA. Grand Jury Recommending His Indictment
<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he was “<a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/lindsey-graham-georgia-grand-jury-report_n_64fb369ae4b043f73bc0f5e4" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">totally surprised</a>” by the news that a Georgia grand jury recommended that he be <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/georgia-special-grand-jury-report-public_n_64fb2e97e4b0f847718b572f" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">criminally</a> indicted over his alleged role in the efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.</p>
<p>“What I did was consistent with my job as being a U.S. senator, chair of the Judiciary Committee,” Graham told reporters in South Carolina on Friday, September 8, 2023. “I think the system in this country is getting off the rails and we have to be careful not to use the legal system as a political tool.”</p>
<p>The Georgia grand jury voted 13–7 earlier this year to recommend charges against Graham. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis did not ultimately charge Graham when she brought <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-indicted-georgia_n_637ea2bce4b082d8e6cd4fcd" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">charges against former President Donald Trump</a> and other allies in August.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/georgia-special-grand-jury-report-public_n_64fb2e97e4b0f847718b572f" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">special grand jury report</a> made public Friday, September 8, 2023, the panel also thought others should be criminally charged for plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, including former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn and former U.S. Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, both <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/news/topic/republican-party" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Republicans</a> from Georgia.</p>
<p>Prosecutors in the case examined a strange phone call Graham had with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger 10 days after the 2020 election. Graham asked Raffensperger on the call if <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-georgia-graham/senator-grahams-call-with-georgia-official-part-of-election-probe-washington-post-idUSKBN2AD046" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">he had the power to toss out</a> all mail ballots in certain counties. Raffensber claimed it <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-georgia-graham/senator-grahams-call-with-georgia-official-part-of-election-probe-washington-post-idUSKBN2AD046" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">sounded like</a> Graham was suggesting he find a way to throw out legally cast ballots.</p>
