<p>The&nbsp;<strong>38-meter-tall statue</strong>, which was intended to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence, was erected in 1931. The very idea for the structure at the top of the granite Corcovado mountain (710 meters above sea level) was born a decade before the official unveiling.</p> <p>The originator of the statue depicting Christ with outstretched arms was Hector da Silva. His proposal proved superior to other equally impressive designs, including a giant cross or a figure of God with a globe in his hand.
