Caste-based Lighter Skin Preferences
<p>In her anecdote, what Wilkerson omits and people unfamiliar with Indian culture might not realize, is this: since the sister’s marriage was being arranged through family channels, the young men coming to interview the sister shared her caste. In other words, rejection or exclusion based on caste was simply not a factor. This fact takes the wind out of Wilkerson’s entire caste oppression argument.</p>
<p>Rather, the preference for lighter skin was (and still is) an aesthetic preference. It is harder to dislodge as it is continually reinforced by media images, in much the same way that trim and toned figures are exalted in popular culture all over the world.</p>
