<p>In her anecdote, what Wilkerson omits and people unfamiliar with Indian culture might not realize, is this: since the sister&rsquo;s marriage was being arranged through family channels, the young men coming to interview the sister shared her caste. In other words, rejection or exclusion based on caste was simply not a factor. This fact takes the wind out of Wilkerson&rsquo;s entire caste oppression argument.</p> <p>Rather, the preference for lighter skin was (and still is) an aesthetic preference.
