<p>Coriolanus was a Roman general with many battlefield successes against the Volci. Despite this, he was banished from Rome for being too dictatorial. So he offered his services to the Volci, but after many victories, he was convinced to spare Rome. He died in exile, shamed for his perfidy and failure.</p> <p>Often depicted on stage as a tragic anti-hero, Coriolanus was a symbol of failed loyalty and failed statesmanship. He cared little for conventions or for dissenting views.
