A Better La Mejor

In the beginning, there was Ke Buena and La Z. And there they were, fighting against each other with little noteworthy competition since the 1990s.

When it ca to popular music on the capital FM dial, this was all you got. Mexico City has long had a decided slant toward contemporary, English and talk formats on FM, much as country music has had a hard time in a handful of the largest US metros.

There were a few competitors. The most notable was the two-year stint of La Mejor on Mexico City FM, when it broadcast on XHMVS-FM 102.5 between 2006 and 2008. But MVS decided it wanted to keep that station as the talk exception to its near-laser focus on a two-network operation. Some AM stations have hung in for a long time, like XEBS. But even as La Mejor grew, MVS opted not to reintroduce it to Mexico City on a large scale. (And no, the Grupo Radio Digital partnership doesn’t count.)
