Thailand Travel Diary | 02: The Commute to Khaosan Road

The first thing I notice is the flowerpots on the freeway. Pink and orange bougainvillaea flowers. The landscape rushes past in olive green and gray, and brown. We approach the city and pass many “Long Live the King” billboards with ornate gold frames.

Two school girls on the train wear black uniforms — pleated skirts and white shirts with silver-buckle belts and fresh nail art. Their long hair hangs loose. One stares out the window while the other texts on her sky-blue phone.

We disembark with no idea how to get to Kao San Road — Thailand’s Yellow Brick Road for backpackers. As we walk towards the main road, we’re intercepted by a middle-aged man.

He’s neatly dressed; a white shirt, black slacks, a gold and silver Casio watch on his wrist, a pen perched in his shirt pocket, and a suspicious wad of Baht bills poking out.
