Keep Being What You Want to See in the World

Time and time again, I have to remind myself to keep being what I want to see in the world. It’s a vital part of my spiritual practice. However, when facing challenges, like hostile people and situations that create suffering, it’s too easy to turn to the opposite behaviors and thoughts of what I want the world to be.

When I first heard the legendary leader Mahatma Gandhi’s profound message: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” it hit home. A light bulb turned on in my mind. Of course, to change the world, you can’t go around acting like the type of person you want to change.

Humankind won’t benefit from me protesting angrily about things I deem wrong or getting annoyed with people who disagree with me. That sort of behavior causes disharmony and imbalance. It encourages defensiveness and aggression.

So, I made a silent vow to be mindful of what I said and did to ensure I became a consistent, balanced role model and sent out the frequency of compassion rather than dislike. But I came across challenges. It turns out that to keep being what you want to see, you need steady determination and to stay awake about what you’re doing.

Challenges to being what you want to see

When a neighbor tells me about some atrocity or the other, or I hear negative news on the TV, my hackles rise. I want to defend anyone who suffers and stop anyone who harms them. I want to prevent people from damaging the planet, ruining the oceans, and hurting sentient life due to carelessness.
