Hong Kong Judge Rejects Government Request to Ban Anthem
<p>On Friday, July 28, 2023, a Hong Kong court declined the government’s request to ban the popular protest anthem “Glory to Hong Kong,” according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/07/28/hong-kong-china-democracy-anthem-ruling/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">The Washington Post</a>.</p>
<p>Hong Kong is a special administrative region in China, which means it is semiautonomous and has its own form of government. Hong Kong used to be a British colony. Its semiautonomous status is set to expire in <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2019-hong-kong-expiration/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">2047</a>; however, China has slowly begun to violate its autonomy already.</p>
<p>Officials in China wanted to ban <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/13/hong-kong-google-anthem-search/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">the unofficial anthem</a> from being shared, sung, or even performed anywhere in the semiautonomous city of Hong Kong.</p>
