He died in the Name of Conservation: The Murder of John H. Woodruff

Not too much is known about the life of John H. Woodruff. What we do know is that he lived with his wife and two children in Scotia, New York. Nearly four weeks before his death, he had left his job at the real estate office of J.A. Lindsley to become a Game Protector. After finishing first on the civil service exam, he was appointed by New York State Conservation Commissioner George D. Pratt on November 1st, 1919. This came as no surprise to those who knew him, as he was known to be a lover of the outdoors and very good with a shotgun. During his short time as a game protector, he was known to be “hated by hunters of game out of season” and “zealous in his prosecutions of men caught violating state law”. However, his wife was always worried each time he left for his new job. Her worries only increased when he received a threatening letter, stating “I’ll get you” and “I’m not afraid of you”. John merely ripped up the letter and said “Well, they’re not going to get me”.
