I’m Not Sure If Japan Loves Me Or Hates Me

Japan is a confusing place, that much should be obvious to anyone who has spent any time in the country. Take one look at the language and you’ll realise that having three writing systems is probably two too many. But it’s not the language, the mascots, or the difference between burnable and non-burnable garbage that confuses me most about this country.

It’s what the locals think about me.

There isn’t another country in the world that treats me like Japan does, showing me equal amounts of love and disdain. It’s an abusive relationship where one second, Japan is taking me out and showering me with love and the next it is trying to treat me like I don’t exist. It makes it hard to gauge the truth about how the country feels about my lanky, Australian presence.
