Follies of the Independent Baptist Church — Alcohol (Part 1)

We have to remember that Proverbs is a poetic book, and it must be read as such. In poetry, there is usually a lot of symbolism used. The same is true with this verse. The author mentions red wine because, in these days and in this culture, red wine was much more desirable than white wine, whether because of its color or its taste. Giving his color in the cup is literally translated as “its eye.” It’s referring to the wine sparkling, or being appealing to the eyes, almost like it’s staring back at you. Moving itself aright refers to how the wine glides smoothly out of the wineskin, or bottle, and into the throat. When looked at in a poetic way, as it should be, this verse also is speaking of abusing wine. It’s instructing us not to lust, if you will, for wine. Don’t go after it just to satisfy a fleshly desire for it.

Visit Now
