Immigrant at 17, Refugee at 21. I Was Both, So Here’s My Story

Let’s start at the beginning: I was born in 2000’s Ukraine, nine years after the country’s longed-for independence.

My family just made it out alive of the 90s — a tumultuous period of hyper-accelerated capitalism and banditism. Entire lives were crashed or evelated. People became billionaires overnight and lost everything the day after.

My parents struggled to put food on the table, let alone get a stable job in this seemingly never-ending chaos. Meat and cheese were reserved for my brother only, while other family members contented themselves with the leftovers.
