I’m Nostalgic for a Time I Hated

It’s 2:36 AM. I am typing this while listening to “Lean On” by Major Lazer. This song came out unexpectedly on Spotify, and it got me looking for other songs from my youth.

Cute, right?

NO.

Back when songs like these came out (you know which ones I mean), I had a burning hatred for “today’s music.” Justin Bieber, Sia, David Guetta, Rihanna, and other singles like “Cool Kids” by Echosmith (you know exactly the vibe I am describing).

I grew up on soft rock: Phil Collins, The Police (I was virtually obsessed with Sting), Elton John, Billy Joel, Chicago, Toto, and so on. If you mentioned one of these artists to me back when I was 14, I would have revered you like a God.

I still remember one day in high school, when I was wearing my typical outfit — a red bandana, a Police shirt, and colored skinny jeans — when a preppy-looking girl came up to me in the bathrooms and had a breakdown over my shirt (or maybe I was having one and I was projecting?) because she knew the band since her dad was a huge fan. I was 14, so this was eight years ago. Can you imagine the amount of adrenaline pumping through my body at that moment for my amygdala and hypothalamus to work together and make a core memory out of it?
