From Assumptions to Awareness: A DEI Journey of Reflection and Realization

Participants had joined from across PAN India, bringing different regional perspectives and workplace experiences into the room. But the session started with something I often see in DEI conversations, very low energy and a sense of familiarity.
Many participants felt the topic was already well understood. ☺️

Comments like these came up early in the room:

• “DEI we already know.”
• “We don’t really have biases.”
• “In our teams everyone is treated the same.”

Instead of pushing theory, we shifted the session toward self-reflection and activities.

Over the 1.5 days, several exercises helped change the tone of the conversation:

• Self-assessment activities where participants reflected on their everyday decisions and interactions.😌
• Discussions around visible vs. invisible biases the ones we easily recognize and the ones that quietly influence our behaviour.🌿
• Group exercises that showed how assumptions form quickly, even when we believe we are completely objective.😌
• Conversations about how inclusion shows up in small everyday workplace moments.
Slowly, the energy in the room started changing.✨

What began with “we already know this” turned into deeper reflection about how bias can exist without intention and how awareness is the first step toward building inclusive workplaces.😌

Delivering this session in Amritsar, a place known for its spiritual and cultural significance, added a meaningful layer to the experience. It reminded us that respect, dignity, and equality are values that extend far beyond the workplace.✨

By the end of the program, the discussion had shifted from defending our beliefs to questioning our assumptions and that’s where real learning begins.
