Horizon Forbidden West Is a Beautiful Mess That I Enjoyed

As the credits rolled on Horizon Forbidden West, a mix of awe, frustration, and genuine intrigue washed over me. The game I had just finished was a marvel, a technological feat that represents the culmination of so many different accomplishments, game engine optimizations, and creative individuals. Part of me felt like this was as good as games would ever get. But I also felt strangely hollow.

I struggled with this ambivalence all throughout Horizon Forbidden West. Throughout my 60 hour play session, I came to realize just how truly massive this game is, and the cost it pays for being so gargantuan.

When I first started Forbidden West over a year ago, I had already completed Horizon Zero Dawn, the predecessor to Forbidden West in two long sessions. The game was a tight open world experience, with just enough variety to keep me interested. But Forbidden West manages to add too much across the board without really accounting for how all of these new systems are supposed to work together.
