Homophobia, Holotropic Breathwork and the MAPS therapeutic manual for MDMA therapy

Western psychedelia has a regrettably colourful history of scientists, psychiatrists and other ne’er-do-wells attempting to exert power and manipulate behaviour through psychedelics. It is often forgotten that influential figures like Timothy Leary and Stanislav Grof used and promoted psychedelic conversion therapy to ‘cure’ patients of their homosexuality.

Today, more people are asking how to make psychedelics safer for queer people. Queer scholars have pioneered a new era of scholarship in this field, and prominent organisations like MAPS and the Chacruna Institute are actively promoting the inclusion of marginalised voices and queer-affirming therapy. However, past work is often still uncritically referenced without acknowledgment of the homophobic undertones. Queer inclusion needs to be an ongoing conversation about how to make proclamations of queer inclusion a reality.

Website
