Do You Ever Get Home Sick?

I’m usually pretty excited to go on vacation. Doh. Who isn’t? The adrenaline and anticipation is like none other. From the moment you book your trip to the moment you land in a spanking new destination, the exhilaration just fills the air. I’m not even tired from the commute because I’m just so eager to start exploring!

Most of my trips out of Canada span about 5 days to 4 weeks at the most. I’ve never been away from home for more than that. My longest trips are always to Malaysia. Of course, I can’t possibly commute over 20+ hours and spend one week there! It would be a waste of money, never mind the exhaustion of rushing around.

Prior to COVID, we would visit Malaysia every year for 3–4 weeks. I always look forward to exploring new areas, trying new food, and shopping! There’s never a moment of boredom. But near the tail end of my 4 week trips to Malaysia, I start feeling a little strange. Like I want to go home.

I get tired of the sticky heat and think about the nice weather at home

I start missing my regular routine. Yes, even work.

I start to miss my family and friends.

I yearn to go back to my badminton schedule.

I miss my shower, toilet, and bed.

I call home often to check on things and that helps to alleviate some of the homesickness. I’ve done all the eating, shopping, and sightseeing that I want. As the days go on, I find myself wanting to go home more than ever.
