The Czech Republic, Hockey, Jagr and Me

Two years ago, I liked hockey an average amount. I really started watching the sport during my senior year of high school (2011–12), when the Rangers reached the conference finals for the first time that I could remember. When I decided that I would study abroad in Prague during my junior year of college in the spring of 2015, I knew that the Czech Republic was historically a hockey country, and I was excited to experience it. I packed one of those super cute New York Rangers winter hats hoping that strangers would stop me to talk about the NHL when I wore it (spoiler alert: they didn’t.)

I had no idea though that I would become such good friends with someone who loved and worked in hockey. Everyone in my study abroad program was assigned a Czech Buddy — I just happened to get paired with Betty, a local student, who loved hockey, had worked with one of the local hockey teams and was willing to introduce to me to the Czech culture surrounding the sport.
