The Prado & How it Changed My Mind About Historical Painting

From the time I was a child, I have always been extremely interested in the history of art. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin which is approximately an hour and forty-five minute train ride north of Chicago. I was extremely fortunate that growing up my family would take day trips down to Chicago fairly regularly. We would take the train down to the city center, affectionately called “the Loop” and walk around downtown, and go to the Field Museum or the Aquarium. My favorite visit was always the art museum. I can trace my love of art history back to my many trips to the Art Institute of Chicago which houses a huge collection of Impressionist paintings. For a long time I was obsessed with the Impressionists. In highschool I would devour art history novels about the different artist’s lives and how the art movement began. I don’t really know if this is a typical pastime for teenagers, but I could not get enough of it.
