He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and served in the United States Army. He was the Mayor of San Jose and served as a U.S. Congressman from California for twenty years. He became Secretary of Commerce under President Bill Clinton and Secretary of Transportation under President George W. Bush (during which time 9/11 happened). The San Jose Airport has been named for him. Secretary Mineta served on JANM’s board of governors and as chair of the board of governors.
