Connecting My Art to My Heritage
<p>In primary school, I always felt like I was the odd one out. In the community around me, I felt disconnected from it. I felt like a wallflower. When I went to university, one of the things I noticed was that I was definitely out of place. The people around me were much more in tune with their heritage and way more comfortable with themselves than I was.</p>
<p>Then, there’s the issue that when I got into art, it wasn’t Indigenous enough to be called Indigenous Art or that I wasn’t an Indigenous Artist. Mainly because of the mental image that I had of myself. I went to an Indigenous craft market last year and I felt out of place there. But, y’know what? I came out of that market stronger than I ever had been. I was more proud of myself than I’ve ever been.</p>
