Guns Don’t Kill People, So What Does?

You may have heard (repeatedly) that it’s not guns that kill people, but people (with guns). (Note that the last two words are silent in some American dialects.)

Recently, I heard a gun owner opine that it’s neither guns nor people that kill people, but hatred. He had no hatred, he said, and so would never use his guns against another human being.

This is a noble sentiment, but clearly hatred alone does not kill. The fatal combination is preponderantly a gun and a person to pull the trigger. While a strong emotion may be present, that emotion needn’t be hatred. As we’ve seen repeatedly, fear or even swift anger is enough to cost someone their life in the literal blink of an eye.
