Shave Your Head: Be Free

In anthropology, the process of identity change (when observed in coming-of-age rituals) is often mapped out as Separation → Liminality → Reintegration. So, this process of letting go can act as a form of that initial separation phase.

More than just the identity aspect of things, the process of shaving one’s head is scary at first but ultimately liberating, because one finds out that they don’t need hair to live well. Oftentimes throughout our lives in Western societies, we come to believe that our wellbeing and our “happiness” (whatever the hell that is) depends on having and maintaining certain things in our lives. The falseness of this belief can be demonstrated perfectly through the shaving of one’s head. Many believe that hair is something that makes us more presentable, more attractive, more likable, and, therefore, that a piece of one’s wellbeing and “happiness” rests on its existence and maintenance. After a month or so of having a shaved head, one comes to understand how ridiculous such an idea is.

Visit Now
