Celebrating Miami’s Black History — Spotlighting the Historic Hampton House

Miami Beach was a “sundown town” during the segregation period, where blacks could only visit and wander around if they had a pass or were working. Therefore, many black celebrities and tourists would spend their time at the place to be — the Historic Hampton House. The legacy of this location is carried by stories and memories passed from generation to generation.

Imagine enjoying breakfast at the café next to Martin Luther King, Malcom X or Aretha Franklin. Or enjoying a beautiful Miami day at the pool next to Muhammad Ali or Jim Brown. Or catching breathtaking performances in the multi-purpose room by Sam Cooke or Sarah Vaughn. These scenarios just give you a glimpse at the significance of the Historic Hampton House.
